Q&A

Q: My students rely upon their Y Drive to do work in my class, will student Y Drives go away over the summer?
A: At this time- the student Y Drive service will continue to operate as normal. At the moment we do not have a solid solution to replace the Y Drive operation used in CTE labs at DHS.

Q: Will my staff Y Drive disappear this summer?
A: No, however the staff Y Drives will become read only (you will no longer be able to write to it). This will take place on July 15, 2015. We expect all staff members to begin using either OneDrive or Google Drive.

Q: What is the Google Drive app, and how is it different than Google Drive in my web browser?
A: The application differs from the web browser version as it will allow you to save files directly from applications such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc- into your cloud storage. Once the Google Drive application is installed, you can treat it the same way you use the Y Drive. You can also setup google drive to autosync other folders on your PC.

Q: Do I need the Google Drive app?
A: Not necessarily. If you plan on saving items directly from Microsoft Word or other applications, the Google Drive application may come in handy.

Q: Will my Google Drive ever go away?
A: No.

Q: I am leaving the school district, can I take my Google Drive contents with me?
A: Before you leave us, you will be able to download all of your google data using Google Takeout. Google Takeout will save all of your emails, drive contents, etc to a ZIP file that you can take with you. Students can use this service as well, giving them a digital student portfolio!

Q: How much space will I have?
A: Google Apps for Education gives us unlimited space on google drive. Save as much or as little as you want!
